Lucky Nails Salon

Lucky Nails Salon is located at the intersection of Allen and Cooley Streets in Springfield, Massachusetts. We started the project from a “vanilla envelope” space with four walls and a floor. The owner, with whom we worked very closely throghout the project, provided a half-page picture out of a magazine from which to design the salon and eight weeks later we had it completed.

Construction Training For Women

According to research, 44% of working women are the sole supporters of their families, and 80% of these women work in jobs that often pay less than a living wage (Tiffany Bluemle, Vermont Works For Women).

Last January, Pioneer Valley Rebuilders started a new “Women Learn 2 Earn” construction crew for carpentry work. The lack of job opportunities for offenders is particularly harmful for women, many of whom are single mothers living below the poverty line.

The new women’s crew will address this disparity by equipping previously incarcerated women with the skills and experience necessary to earn family sustaining wages.

Over The Years: Over 50 Projects, 37 Trainees, 14 Graduates

Pioneer Valley Rebuilders was incorporated in 2003 and began the Learn 2 Earn Construction Training Program in the summer of 2006. Since then, we’ve completed over 50 construction and carpentry projects in Western Massachusetts, mostly in Hampden and Hampshire counties.

All program participants complete a basic training and safety course before joining their supervisor on-site. Once the construction training is finished, Pioneer Valley Rebuilders and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department provide job search and placement assistance.

So far, 17 participants have graduated, and we’ve helped 14 individuals secure full-time employment.
